The city's main conservation area
Old Aberdeen is the city's main conservation area. It was here that Aberdeen's first university was founded in 1495 and at the King's College Visitor Centre one can trace the history of the old town and its student life. St Machar's Cathedral is one of the city's three cathedrals and is one of Aberdeen's oldest granite buildings. A fascinating feature is the magnificent oak heraldic ceiling. It was around the cathedral that the settlement of Old Aberdeen grew. Cobbled streets lead past houses and buildings dating back from every century since 1500, blending together with a truly timeless quality that is the essence of Old Aberdeen.
