Hidden in tranquil wooded countryside at the foot of the Cleveland Hills
Hidden in tranquil wooded countryside at the foot of the Cleveland Hills, one of the loveliest settings of any English priory, and the best preserved Carthusian monastery in England. Monks lived as hermits in their cells and one cell, recently restored, is furnished to give a clear picture of their austere routine of work and prayer. Visitors enter through the manor built by Thomas Lascelles in 1654 on the site of the monastery guest house. It was rebuilt at the turn of the century using traditional techniques, typical of the Arts and Crafts movement.
