One of the loveliest situations in Western Ireland
Derreen lies on 'unprofitable' or 'waste' land, in one of the loveliest situations in Western Ireland; indeed in Northern Europe. The land was so described by its first English owner, Sir William Petty, in his survey of Desmond (Kerry) in the 1660s. Throughout the garden a rich patine or moss, lichens, ferns, saxifrages and Gaultheria shallon clothes paths, rocks and tree-trunks
