A stunning 17th century country mansion

Audley End was a palace in all but name. Built by Thomas Howard, Earl of Suffolk, to entertain King James I. The King may have had his suspicions, for he never stayed there; in 1618 Howard was imprisoned and fined for embezzlement. Charles II bought the property in 1668 for œ50,000, but within a generation the house was gradually demolished, and by the 1750s it was about the size you see today. There are still over 30 rooms to see, each with period furnishings. The house and its gardens, including a 19th century parterre and rose garden, are surrounded by an 18th century landscaped park laid out by `Capability' Brown. OPENING TIMES 1 April - 30 September Wed - Sun and BHs 11am - 6pm. Last admission 5pm. 1 October - 31 October Wed - Sun 10am - 3pm. House by pre-booked guided tour only. Guided tours only in October
