Historic family home of the Earl of Devon

Historic family home of the Earl of Devon, Powderham Castle was built between 1390 and 1420 by Sir Philip Courtenay. The present Earl is his direct descendant. The Castle was extensively damaged during the Civil War and fell to the Parliamentary Forces after a protracted siege. When the family returned to the Castle seventy years later they embarked on a series of rebuilding and restoration which continued into the 19th century. The Castle contains a large collection of portraits by many famous artists, including Cosway, Reynolds, Kneller and Hudson as well as some charming paintings by gifted members of the family. The 14ft high Stumbels Clock and the magnificent rosewood and brass inlaid bookcases by John Channon are particularly fine. One of the most spectacular rooms on view is the Music Room, designed for the 3rd Viscount by James Wyatt. It contains an exceptional Axminster carpet upon which sits recently commissioned carved gilt wood furniture. gardens The Castle is set within an ancient deer park beside the Exe Estuary and the Gardens and grounds are informally laid out. The fine Victorian Rose Garden is the home of Timothy, a 150 year old tortoise; The Children's Secret Garden houses a collection of pets and animals behind its walls to delight children and visitors of all ages; and the newly restored Woodland Garden is open in Spring and early Summer when at its best.
