Nostell Priory

Historic Houses & Building
A lovely and enjoyable day out for all the family

This Palladian mansion is still the family home of Lord and Lady St Oswald. Inside you can see superb plasterwork ceilings in the state rooms designed and decorated in the middle of the 18th century. Chippendale, England's most famous cabinet maker, designed furniture especially for the house. Only at Nostell can you find his furniture in such a variety of styles: the magnificent mahogany library table and richly lacquered green and gold chinoiserie furniture. Nostell is also home to many art treasures: the Brussels tapestries by Van der Borcht, and the famous paintings of The Family of Sir Thomas More attributed to Holbein and The Procession to Calvary by Pieter Breughel the Younger. These are just some of the many collections that you can enjoy. The remarkable six feet high 18th century dolls' house is still complete with its original fittings and furniture and is always a great attraction for our visitors. You can test your knowledge of roses in the old walled garden, where many varieties are laid out in ornamental beds originally designed by the renowned architect Robert Adam as a soft fruit garden. A gentle lakeside walk leads you to the secluded summer house around which the beautiful flowering magnolia trees can be enjoyed in early summer. Close by is Wragby church which is also open to visitors. Next to the adventure playground is a picnic area, an ideal place to enjoy lunch. OPENING TIMES 27 March - 30 June & 1 - 12 September Thur & Sun, 12 noon - 5pm. 1 July - 31 August Wed - Sun, 12 noon - 5pm
