Historic Houses & Building
A stunning building with picturesque surrounds

NEWBY HALL, the Yorkshire home of Mr and Mrs Robin Compton, is a late 17th century house built in the style of Sir Christopher Wren. William Weddell, an ancestor of Mr Compton, made the Grand Tour in the 1760s, and amongst the treasures he acquired were magnificent classical statuary and a superb set of Gobelin Tapestries. To house these treasures, Weddell commissioned Robert Adam to create the splendid domed Sculpture Gallery and Tapestry Room that we see today. The Regency dining room and billiard room were added later. There is much fine Chippendale furniture and in recent years Mrs Compton has restored the decoration of the house, painstakingly researching colour and decor of the Adam period. gardens 25 acres of glorious gardens contain rare and beautiful shrubs and plants. Newby's famous double herbaceous borders, flanked by great bastions of yew hedges, sweep down to the River Ure. Formal gardens such as the Autumn and Rose Gardens - each with splashing fountains - a Victorian rock garden, the tranquillity of Sylvia's Garden, pergolas and even a tropical garden, make Newby a `Garden for all Seasons'. Newby holds the National Collection of the Genus Cornus and in 1987 won the Christie's/ HHA Garden of the Year Award. The gardens also incorporate an exciting children's adventure garden and miniature railway. Historic Houses Association Member.
