Merchant Adventurers' HallHistoric Houses & Building, Historic Sites & Monuments
|
Built in 1357/62 and substantially unaltered. In it the Merchants transacted their business, as their successors still do today. On the ground floor was their hospice, where they cared for the poor, and their private chapel, a unique survival in England. There are good collections of early portraits, furniture, silver and other objects used by the Merchants over the centuries, when their wealth and influence helped to make York the second city in England after London. Opening Times: 13 Mar - 14 Nov: daily, 8.30am - 5pm. 15 Nov - 10 Mar 2000: daily (not Suns), 8.30am - 3.30pm. Closed Christmas/New Year week
