Kelburn Castle & Country Centre

Historic Houses & Building, Historic Sites & Monuments
A unique attraction and a delight for all ages

KELBURN has been the home of the Boyle family, later the Earls of Glasgow, since the 13th century and it continues to be used as a family home. The original Norman Keep was extended in 1580, and the magnificent 1700 William and Mary Mansion House was added by the 1st Earl of Glasgow, whose title was bestowed as reward for his role in the Act of Union. The final addition is the Victorian wing of 1879 with its original William Morris wallpapers. The essential charm of the castle is its intimate lived-in atmosphere, its varied styles and stunning location. The beautiful and extensive grounds are used for the Country Centre, and include the dramatic glen with woodland trails, waterfalls, and deep gorges. The peaceful walled garden `The Plaisance' is dominated by two 1,000 year old yew trees and its exotic shrubs benefit from the Gulf Stream climate. Historical features include the Robert Adam Monument, 18th century Sundial and an Ice House. For the active, there is horse riding, adventure courses, young children's stockade and soft play area. The Secret Forest provides a series of exotic follies and fairytale features, "a unique attraction and a delight for all ages". Historic Houses Association Member.
