Harewood House

Home to the Earls of Harewood for over 200 years, the house is renowned for its stunning architecture, exquisite Adam interiors, Chippendale furniture, `Capability' Brown landscape, Parterre Terrace and outstanding art collections including Italian Renaissance, Turner, 18th century portraits and even 20th century masterpieces, and has recently been accorded `Designated Museum Status'. Dedicated Watercolour Rooms showcase "Girtin in the North' (March - June) with paintings by Turner's contemporary, Thomas Girtin. Later, the Terrace Gallery bursts into bloom with `The Flower Show' (July - October) with works by David Hockney, Andy Warhol and many more. The Earl of Harewood is the son of the late Princess Mary, daughter of King George V and is cousin of HM Queen Elizabeth II. Princess Mary lived at Harewood for 35 years and her fascinating personal royal memorabilia is displayed throughout the rooms. In the grounds are lakeside and woodland walks, magnificent collections of rhododendron (April - June) and Parterre Terrace complete with box scrolls and seasonal bedding. The hugely popular Harewood Bird Garden is home to over 140 exotic and endangered species from around the world. Outdoor events range from concerts to car rallies, and inside the house, by prior arrangement, are `behind the scenes' visits and specialist guided tours. Telephone for details.
