Home of the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe

FLOORS CASTLE, home of the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe, is situated in the heart of the Scottish Border Country. It is reputedly the largest inhabited castle in Scotland. Designed by William Adam, who was both masterbuilder and architect, for the first Duke of Roxburghe, building started in 1721. It was the present Duke's great-great-grand-father James, the 6th Duke, who embellished the plain Adam features of the building. In about 1849 Playfair, letting his imagination and talent run riot, transformed the Castle, creating a multitude of spires and domes. The apartments now display the outstanding collection of French 17th and 18th century furniture, magnificent tapestries, Chinese and European porcelain and many other fine works of art. Many of the treasures in the castle today were collected by Duchess May, American wife of the 8th Duke. The castle has been seen on cinema screens worldwide in the film Greystoke, as the home of Tarzan, the Earl of Greystoke. Gardens The extensive parkland and gardens overlooking the Tweed provide a variety of wooded walks. The walled garden contains splendid herbaceous borders and in the outer walled garden a summerhouse built for Queen Victoria's visit in 1867 can still be seen. An excellent children's playground and picnic area are very close to the castle. Historic Houses Association Member. OPENING TIMES SUMMER: 2 April - 31 October Daily: 10am - 4.30pm. Last admission 4pm. WINTER: November - March Closed to the general public, available for events
