Fairfax House

Historic Houses & Building
Acquired and fully restored by the York Civic Trust in 1983/84

FAIRFAX HOUSE was acquired and fully restored by the York Civic Trust in 1983/84. The house, described as a classic architectural masterpiece of its age and certainly one of the finest townhouses in England, was saved from near collapse after considerable abuse and misuse this century, having been converted into a cinema and dance hall. The richly decorated interior with its plasterwork, wood and wrought-iron, is now the home for a unique collection of Georgian furniture, clocks, paintings and porcelain. The Noel Terry Collection, gift of a former treasurer of the York Civic Trust, has been described by Christie's as one of the finest private collections formed this century. It enhances and complements the house and helps to create that special `lived-in' feeling, providing the basis for a series of set-piece period exhibitions which bring the house to life in a very tangible way.
