Six centuries of history

A very interesting house which developed over six centuries from a typical medieval manor around a courtyard into a Tudor and Georgian mansion. Many rooms of different periods are seen by visitors who enjoy the impressive yet intimate ambience of the family home of the Brudenells, seven of whom were Earls of Cardigan. The most flamboyant of them was the 7th Earl who led the Light Brigade charge at Balaklava and of whom there are some historic relics and pictures. The present owner is Mr Edmund Brudenell who has carefully restored the house from its dilapidated condition at the end of the last war and also added considerably to the furniture and picture collection. The gardens have been made over the last thirty years, with long, mixed borders of shrubs, old fashioned roses and flowers, a recent parterre designed by David Hicks and long walks under fine old trees by the water. The car park beside the big lake is a good place for picnics. Historic Houses Association Member. OPENING TIMES SUMMER: June - August Suns, 2 - 5pm Open Sun & Mon for Easter, early and late Spring BHs & August BH 2 - 5pm. Open at all other times by arrangement, including pre-booked parties. WINTER: House and Gardens closed to casual visitors. Open at all other times by arrangement for groups
