Robert Adam's 18th century masterpiece, a real `castle in the air', is perched on a cliff high above the crashing waves of the Firth of Clyde. Arrow slits and mock battlements give medieval touches to the sturdy exterior, and on the seaward-side front is the imposing drum tower. The interior is the epitome of disciplined elegance, crowned by the spectacular oval staircase ascending through ornamental pillars and ironwork balustrading. Adam also designed many interior fittings. The exterior grounds encompass Scotland's first country park.
