The dreamchild of two romantics

Chiddingstone Castle was the dreamchild of two romantics - Squire Henry Streatfeild, who rebuilt his ancestral home c1805 in the fashionable `Castle Style'; and Denys Bower, the distinguished art connoisseur, who bought it in 1955 as a home for himself and his collections. In both cases the dream became a nightmare. The Streatfeilds could not afford this miniature version of a nobleman's residence, and eventually let it. Denys Bower lacked means to restore it, battered by military and then scholastic occupation, though he kept at bay the destruction that engulfed countless country houses. He died in 1977 leaving everything to the National Trust. The gift was refused. Subsequently a private Charitable Trust was set up to run the Castle. Restoration was to the highest standard, helped by English Heritage. Ruth Eldridge, Managing Trustee, was awarded the MBE in 1993 for her services. Now the place is again an enchanting home: you may wander at leisure, enjoying the fine furniture and pictures, incomparable Japanese lacquer and swords, Egyptian antiquities and Royal Stuart mementoes. The 35 acre park enjoys magnificent views of the Weald; its subtle contours reappeared when the debris created by the 1987 storm was cleared away. A paradise for photographers!
