Capesthorne Hall

Historic Houses & Building
A stunning historical hall

CAPESTHORNE HALL has been the home of the Bromley-Davenport family and their ancestors since Domesday times when the appointment of Chief Forester carrying the responsibility of law and order in the Forests of Macclesfield and Leek was granted to them. Since then many generations have served in Parliament, the Bromley side providing both a Chancellor and Speaker. The present owner is HM Lord Lieutenant for Cheshire. The existing Hall dating from 1719 was originally designed by the Smiths of Warwick, then altered by both Blore in 1837 and Salvin in 1861, the latter rebuilding the centre section following a disastrous fire. The Hall contains a great variety of paintings, sculptures, furniture and tapestry including a collection of colonial furnishings brought over by the late Lady Bromley-Davenport from her former American home in Philadelphia. The park and gardens extend to over 100 acres and feature a beautiful Georgian Chapel dating from 1720 where services are still held, a chain of man-made lakes, the central one being spanned by a multi-arch brick bridge, a pair of 18th century Milanese gates, and a nature trail and woodland walk where an old Ice House and Water Cascade can be seen. Historic Houses Association Member. OPENING TIMES SUMMER: April - October BHs, Mons & Suns. House, Gardens & Chapel Open at 1.30pm Last admission 3.30pm. Gardens & Chapel 12 noon - 6pm.
