Principal country residence of the Bishops of Durham since Norman times and now the official residence of the present day Bishops. The Chapel, reputedly the largest private chapel in Europe, was originally the 12th century banquet hall. Chapel and State Rooms including the Throne Room, Long Dining Room and King Charles Dining Room are open to the public. Exhibition in the medieval kitchens dedicated to the life of St Cuthbert and the history of the Durham diocese. Access to the adjacent Bishop's Park with its 18th century Deer House. Opening Times: May & Jun: Fri & Sun, 2 - 5pm. Jul: Thur, Fri & Sun, 2 - 5pm. Aug: Wed - Sat & Sun, 2 - 5pm. Sept: Fri & Sun, 2 - 5pm. BH Mon: 2 - 5pm. Bishop's Park: daily, 7am - sunset. Last admission 1/2 hr before close.
