Bala Lake is the largest body of water in Wales, and Best Loved's hotels near Bala Lake (or to give it its Welsh name, Llyn Tegid) are also conveniently situated close to the town of Wrexham. Home to a number of fish species including pike and eel, there is also one fish that is unique to Bala Lake - the Gwyniad, found only in the deep, clear waters of the lake and a member of the salmon family. A haven for sailors at all skill levels, Bala Lake is four miles long and one mile wide with the River Dee running through it and where canoeists, yachtsman and windsurfers enjoy stunning woodland scenery and the mountains of Arenig Fawr, Aran Benllyn and Aran Fawddwy. An amazingly preserved narrow gauge steam railway provides a dramatic nine-mile return journey around the lake for those who prefer dry land.
